Certainly the revelation's a shock as are the extracts so far in The Times from his book. Agassi writes about a brutal childhood and his lifeline dislike for the game of tennis, into which he was trapped by his father and which lead to huge success. Why tell us now is the question and why tarnish such a reputation? Perhaps he just couldn't live with the lie, so sadly we know what happened in l997.

Well, I'd heard about his father being somewhat overbearing, but must admit the drug thing was a shock. Not so much the taking of it but the lying once he'd been caught ... and more importantly, the acceptance of his lies! As Jonathan Overend points out on the BBC website, it makes you wonder how many others have been so easily let off the hook. - I agree, Jean. These revelations pose more questions than they answer. The sport has always needed its big stars, and in the past perhaps some brushing under the carpet took place.
